The difference between endoscope camera CMOS and CCD

Released on Jun. 05, 2021

The endoscope camera uses COMS or CCD photosensitive element, so what is the difference between the two, let's understand it together.

The difference between endoscope camera CMOS and CCD

1. Image quality

CCD charge-coupled device manufacturing technology started early and mature. It uses PN junction or silicon dioxide (SiO2) isolation layer to isolate noise. The imaging quality has certain advantages over CMOS photoelectric sensors. Due to the high integration of CMOS photoelectric sensors, the distance between photoelectric sensor elements and circuits is very close, and the optical, electrical, and magnetic interference between each other is serious. Noise has a great influence on image quality, making CMOS photoelectric sensors for a long time. Unable to enter the utility. In recent years, with the continuous development of CMOS circuit noise reduction technology, good conditions have been provided for the production of high-density and high-quality CMOS image sensors.

2. Output speed

The CCD charge-coupled device needs to output information bit by bit in line units under the control of a synchronized clock, and the speed is slow; while the CMOS photoelectric sensor collects the light signal, it can take out the electrical signal and process the image of each unit at the same time. Information, the speed is much faster than the CCD charge coupled device.

3. Information reading method

The charge information stored by the CCD charge-coupled device needs to be read after the synchronization signal is controlled by the next bit-by-bit transfer. The charge information transfer and read output require a clock control circuit and three sets of different power supplies. The whole circuit is relatively complex. The CMOS photoelectric sensor directly generates a current (or voltage) signal after photoelectric conversion, and the signal reading is very simple.

4. Power and power consumption

Most CCD charge-coupled devices require three sets of power supplies and consume a lot of power; CMOS photoelectric sensors only need one power source, and the power consumption is very small, only 1/8 to 1/10 of CCD charge-coupled devices, CMOS photoelectric sensors It has great advantages in energy saving.

The CMOS photosensitive element can integrate the image acquisition unit and the signal processing unit on the same chip. Compared with the traditional CCD image system, the integration of the entire image system on a chip not only reduces power consumption, but also has a lighter weight. The advantages of reduced space occupation and lower overall price, and it is suitable for large-scale mass production, suitable for applications that require small size, low price, and no high requirements for camera quality.
