Why does the endoscope camera system use CMOS sensor?

The endoscope camera system is used for clinical endoscopy or surgery in hospitals, displaying video imaging of the examination and surgical area.

The oldest endoscope camera system uses CCD. With the continuous development and demand of medical technology, COMS has become the mainstream. So why is COMS sensor used in the endoscope camera system?

Advantages of COMS sensor:

1. Picture detail improvement

In the past, in the transmission process of CCD camera system, noise points were easily generated at the edge of the picture, which could not show the real tissue details. As a result, some lymph node dissection and nerve protection were easily confused and resulted in accidents.

The full digital signal transmission of CMOS without attenuation can improve the picture details and restore the real organization of the whole picture.

2. Improved sharpness of the picture

The sharpness of endoscopic surgical images represents a better sense of color level and stereoscopic organization, which is generally enhanced by the built-in pixel enhancement. However, the use of pixel enhancement will produce obvious noise points but reduce the clarity.

The high SNR of CMOS can double the pixel enhancement effect under the condition of no noise, and significantly improve the sharpness of the picture.

3. Uniform distribution of brightness

At present, the light source is LED and xenon lamp, which can ensure that the overall brightness of the lumen meets the surgical requirements. However, the brightness of tissues in some gaps and covered parts is still insufficient, which poses risks to the operation. For example, the protection of ureters in the operation of uterus and accessories is usually completed under the condition of insufficient light.

The high sensitivity characteristic of CMOS enables tissues to feedback sufficient brightness performance under insufficient light source irradiation, thus reducing surgical risk.

4. Random window reading ability

Random window reading operation is an aspect that CMOS image sensor is superior to CCD in function, which is also called region of interest selection. In addition, CMOS image sensor's high integration feature makes it easy to open multiple tracking Windows at the same time.

5.  CCD technology chip technology process is complex, not compatible with the standard process, secondly, CCD technology chip needs a high voltage power consumption, so THE CCD technology chip is expensive and inconvenient to use.

The CMOS technology on CMOS image sensor chip, image acquisition unit and signal process unit can be integrated into the same chip, compared with the conventional CCD image system, the whole image system integration on a chip not only reduces the power consumption, but also has a lighter weight, take up the space to reduce the advantages of lower prices and overall, and it is suitable for mass production, is suitable for the requirements of small size, low price, the camera quality is too high requirements.
